Excerpt:
Lizzie turned to face Thomas, furious. "It's my house, and I have every right to leave it if someone is in danger. I honestly thought it might be you!"
"I'm a grown man, Lizzie. I can take care of myself. And how is it James let you out? I left him with instructions to keep you inside."
"He tried to stop me, but he couldn't. It's not his fault."
He rolled his eyes. "Good Lord. I take my eyes off you for one single moment—"
"You don't own me, Thomas," Lizzie snapped, her hands on her hips, and faced him.
Large hands gripped her waist, and a moment later, she found herself thrown over his shoulder. A hard hand delivered an even harder swat to her bottom.
Her head came up at the swat. "Oh! How dare you, Thomas! Put me down!"
"When I'm ready. And at the end of the day, you should know you've earned a spanking,

and I'll be the one to give it. Keep that in mind throughout the afternoon. Especially if you're tempted to disobey my orders again."

An assignment by my elegant and sweet fifth grade teacher was what started it all. The assignment? To write a short story and read it aloud to the class.
Enter a story about a group of fifth grade kids camping in the woods who were attacked by a Grizzly; add body parts everywhere and kids being mauled to death one by one, and pile on top one horrified teacher (Poor Mrs. J!). The kids thought it was cool, however, and I was hooked.
Writing continued throughout Junior and Senior High, in the form of space stories, then spy stories, and by the time I reached high school, had turned into romances!  Every year when spring fever hit, I would take my notebook outside at lunchtime, and soak up the sun, and write. Then I would take it home and type it up on onionskin paper, on an old Underwood typewriter (Yes, I know I'm old!)
One day a few years ago while cleaning, I came upon a tote containing a wad of onionskin paper, rolled up. I was delighted to find a story that I had written when I was about eighteen, and thought, "Hmm, I wonder what would happen if I sat down and re-wrote this? And submitted it.”

Excerpt:

He shook his head and took them, moving inside the kitchen to set them down. When he turned back, she had stopped just inside the doorway. He crooked a finger at her. "Come here."
Her eyes, already large, grew wider as she slowly approached. He reached for her, holding her around the waist with one arm. With the other, he planted a hard swat on her bottom. She shrieked.
"That," he said firmly, "is for leaving the house without telling me. And this," he brought his hand down again," is for doing it the second time. After what happened yesterday in Denver and then in St. Louis, I would have thought you'd know better than to take off without letting me know." He released her, and she took a step backward, rubbing her bottom.
"Ow," she said in a small voice.
Looking at the bags he'd set on the counter, he reached for her. Putting his hands on her waist, he set her up on the kitchen island.
"Look, Emmy, I do appreciate you going and bringing back something to eat. But when I awakened and you were missing, I swear, it took ten years off my life. Can you understand that?"
She nodded. "I'm sorry."
His hands moved to her sides as he leaned forward, shaking his head. "Just don't do it again. All right? I'm utterly serious."
The expression on her face changed suddenly as she tilted her head at him. "Really?"
His own countenance grew wary and his eyes narrowed. "What does that look on your face mean?"
She wiggled forward on the counter and kissed his cheek. "It's nice to have someone worry about me."
His brows knit closer. He took hold of her waist and set her back down so her feet touched the floor, feeling as if he'd lost control of the situation. But she was rifling through the bags now and handed him a package of something, still warm, and a cup of coffee.
When he took it, she gave him a huge smile. Her dimples were showing again.
"Good morning," she said brightly.
"Good morning. Emmy, you do realize—"
"Yes, sir. I do. I won't do it again. There's a bar stool on the other side of the island, if you want to sit down. And there's a potato patty in the bag for you."
He shook his head and moved to sit down. Setting out the other stool next to him, he pointed to it. "Sit."
She shoved her food over in front of the other spot. "I didn't have any eggs, and everyone should have a good breakfast, so I thought..." She frowned at his expression. "Want me to take them back?"
He shook his head. "No, Emmy. I just want to make sure I made an impression on you, that's all. Because if you take off like that again, I'll put you over my knee and spank you."
She blinked up at him, pausing just out of his reach. "But—you said you weren't taking me to raise—I don't understand why I should have to ask permission to leave my own house and run errands."
"I also said I wasn't going to abandon you, if you remember correctly. Your safety is important, and I don't want you taking unnecessary chances with it. Do you understand me?"
Her expression was incredulous.
"Emmy?"
"No," she said softly. "I don't." She tilted her head. "Last night, when we were talking about Mark, you asked if he'd ever hit me. But you just did."
"What I just did was to give you a swat on the bottom, to get your attention so you'd listen to me. I was hoping it would let you know that I expect you to stay safe. Do you think it was mean?"
She lowered her gaze, thinking. "No, I suppose not."
"Did you think it was unwarranted? Suppose you'd gone off alone and someone had gotten hold of you and taken you?"
Her shoulders sagged, and he lifted her chin so her eyes met his.
"What I just did was for the purpose of keeping you safe. Because damn it, like it or not, I do care an awful lot about what happens to you. Abuse, Emmy, is hitting someone just for the sole purpose of hurting them and for no other reason. Usually, when a person abuses someone, they'll pick on someone smaller and less capable of defending themselves. An abuser does it because it makes them feel power over someone else, not because they cherish them and want to protect them.”
Light dawned in her blue eyes. "Ooh. I see. But you can't possibly cherish me, Jackson. I haven't known you long enough."
He took her wrist and reeled her in closer, sitting her up on the bar stool. "Don't be so sure. Now, eat."

And needless to say, my favorite hero is an "Alpha male" who loves his woman to distraction, but is smart (yes, in my opinion, smart is extremely sexy!) stern, and willing to be as strict as necessary to protect her from danger, even danger from herself.

Excerpt:
Tobias frowned. "I have the distinct feeling, Miss Obedience—"
"Obie."
He took a deep breath and repeated his statement once again. "I have the feeling, Obedience, that you're doing your best to manipulate me. And while I am a gentleman, I don't take kindly to attempts at playing me like a puppet. A word of warning to you. I do spank young ladies who are intent on it."
Was that a brief widening of those big blue eyes he saw? If so, she recovered quickly.
"Oh, if I gave you that impression, sir, I do apologize. But please answer one more question?"
He was glaring; he knew it. At the moment, he wanted to grasp her by the shoulders and put her across his knee. Badly.
"Go on," he said, through clenched teeth.
"Well, I was just wondering if the only other reason was because there is no place in town to stay?"
"We were told there would be a hotel for us to stay in when we arrived." Danny looked up at him, keeping her voice soft.
"There is one being built as we sit here, ladies. But it's not finished. And even if it were, there is no female chaperone to look out for you."
"I see." Obedience was chewing her lower lip thoughtfully.
Tobias narrowed his eyes. "Do you?"
She nodded eagerly, and dimples showed as her eyes twinkled mischievously. "And now, I believe I can share my surname with you, Sheriff." But that was all she said, and he leaned down toward her, a threatening growl to his voice.
"I'm waiting, young lady," he said sternly.
She leaned back in her chair, a wide grin spreading across her delicious mouth. "My name is Obie Ann Bartlett," she said triumphantly. "Faith Bartlett is my aunt."
He stared, his eyes narrowing even further.
She stared back. Finally, she leaned forward, her chin resting on a small gloved hand. "So you see, sir, we do indeed have a safe place to stay. And a chaperone."

Excerpt:

“Don’t pick those up. Just tell me what they say, and I’ll bring them.”

“Nonsense. I’m strong as an ox.” She lifted it, surprised that it weighed as much as it did.

“Samantha!”

Surprised at his tone of voice, she froze. He moved toward her and took it from her, frowning.  “What did I just tell you?”

“Not to, but I’m—”

“I heard what you said.” His voice was firm. “This is my house. I’ll do the heavy stuff. Do you hear me?”

She took a step backward, away from him. “I hear you.”

“Then do as I say.” His voice was not just firm. There was a stern quality to it.

She stared at him, speechless, and blinked. She was at a loss. It wasn’t the first time today that he’d used that tone of voice with her.

“I don’t like being scolded.” She had to admit, she sounded petulant.

“There’s a way to avoid it.” He moved into the kitchen with the oversized box, setting it on the island. When she didn’t respond, he turned to her. “Some of these are quite heavy. I don’t want to be responsible for you getting hurt.”

“I’m accustomed to doing things for myself.  And I’ve handled heavier things than this.”

He leaned one hand on the countertop, turning. “I’m absolutely sure that’s true. And perhaps in the past three years you’ve had to do it a lot. On the other hand, this is my house and right now you’re my responsibility, so these are my rules. Now. That’s all I’m going to say about it, except for this. The next time I see you doing it, I’ll smack your bottom.”

She gasped. “You wouldn’t dare.”

His face was close to hers; quite close.

“Try me.”

Excerpt:

"You're still angry at me." he affirmed in a solemn voice.

She glanced up, cocking her head. "Perhaps."

"No 'perhaps' about it. Are you going to talk to me, or are you not?"

"Not." Her chin jutted out defiantly as she finished the roll.

"Want another one?"

"No."

"Water?"

"No, thank you."

With one swift move, he took her by the shoulders and brought her back down to lie down

with her head on the pillow. "Then, go back to sleep."

She gasped, and he continued. "You have two choices. You can tell me what you're

thinking, or you can go back to sleep. Or make that three choices; I can smack your bottom."

Conquered by the Commander by Pippa Greathouse and Ruby Caine

Just released! Conquered by the Commander in the enormously popular Conquered series by Pippa Greathouse and Ruby Caine is now on sale.

Would her past be allowed to rob them both of their future?

Blurb:

Lillianna Collingwood is beautiful and graceful, but she is every bit as hot-headed as her hair is red. When she decides to marry Earl, the commander of the Arabella, she is completely unaware that his name is not really “Earl” at all. He is Lord Darby, the son of the Earl of Darbyshire. Elated, at first, she soon realizes she now has to learn to act the part of a lady. Having grown up in a convent orphanage from the time she was five, she’d learned to be wild. She excelled at cheating in cards and considered stealth as one of her best virtues. A lady? She’s not sure she can do it.

But Darby has a reason he hasn’t told her who he is. She’s entirely too concerned with titles, money, and things. He’s not only determined to teach her those things are not as important as character, but he’s also determined to teach her that her hot-headed behavior is not acceptable.

Lily tries, but she isn’t prepared when the past seems to come back to haunt her. Her past, her nightmares—everything seems to be against her when she arrives. Even Darby’s own mother refuses to accept her into the family, making her feel an outcast. Darby remains her rock, her anchor, but Lily is unable to make herself confide in him about the terrors that plague her night after night.

And Darby fears he is losing her. Can he save her before it’s too late?

Excerpt:

An hour later, Lily realized she had yet to fret about the mill since the game started. Darby sat across from her, regarding his cards with a guarded expression. She gave him an innocent look before asking if he wanted any more cards. “Two,” he grumbled. “Did you notice, dear wife, that when you deal, the odds always appear to favor you? Cheaters pay a heavy price, Lillianna. You would do best to remember that when you hand me those next two cards.”

He watched carefully, scowling as she flicked two cards his way, but it was impossible to see from where in the deck she took them.

“Did you notice, my Lord,” she said, mimicking his exact tone, “how cranky and suspicious you become when you are losing at cards? Or is it the lack of clothes you’re currently wearing which is irritating you? I can give you back a piece of your clothing if you like.” A mischievous grin lit her eyes. “Perhaps your cummerbund will warm you a bit.”

Relaxing in her corset and shift, she still had her stockings and shoes on, whereas poor, unlucky Darby was down to his last vestige of dignity. Narrowing his eyes at her, he picked up his two cards and the briefest of smiles touched his lips before vanishing. She pretended not to notice as she regarded her own hand.

“Are you sure you wish to see this hand through to the end, my Lord?” Lily made a production of frowning at her own hand. “I have taken up enough of your time today. I’ll just pick up these cards and set the furniture back in place. You mother would be extremely displeased to know you sat upon her favorite chair wearing little more than the day you were born.”

His voice was a growl. “Lillianna?  You can return to your seat and finish this hand, or I will bare your arse, bend you over the arm of this damn chair and spank it bright red.”

Lily took her seat reluctantly, frowning at him. “It’s the cold leather on your bare legs making you cross, isn’t it, my Lord? Try not to stick to the seat, sir. Your mother will no doubt notice any sticky residue. And…” She looked up, with a sly smile. “As you have nothing else to raise the bid, perhaps I should fold.”

A smug expression crept into Darby’s eyes. “It’s too late for you to fold, Lillianna. It looks like your corset now belongs to me. I have three of a kind.”

“Impressive, my Lord, but…” She flipped over two cards bearing the same face. Then she slowly, one at a time, revealed two more cards, the only remaining members of the deck matching the first two. “I have two pairs.”

“Four of a kind?” He stood up, his legs leaving damp imprints in his wake before he leaned over the table to glare at her. “You little cheat.”

Conquered by the Captain by Greathouse & Caine

Two of Blushing Books’ talented authors have joined forces to bring you a rollicking new romance set on the high seas. Conquered by the Captain is book 1 in The Conquered series by Pippa Greathouse and Ruby Caine.

Two women on the same ship, sparring with two alpha males while journeying to meet their intendeds. Unfortunately for them, the same man promised marriage to both.

Blurb: Arabella St. John faces a new life, in a new land, as she boards the merchant ship from England to America. Her father has arranged for her marriage in New Orleans, to her dismay. The ship is massive.

She has no desire to be there. Everything and everyone she loves is in England. The chief-mate seems friendly enough, but then she meets Captain Gregory Smythe, who neither needs nor wants women aboard his ship. And he’s quite vocal about it.

It’s ‘hate at first sight.’

Gregory is unhappy at the thought of having to be responsible for, not one, but two ladies on ship, especially after finding out two merchant ships off the coast of the Carolinas have been recently sunk by Privateers.

On top of that, females aboard a vessel with an all-male crew are trouble; everyone knows that.  And when food goes missing, and a stowaway is found hidden in his very own cabin, he realizes trouble follows Arabella wherever she goes. And when the only two women booked for passage realize they are destined to marry the same man, it all seems to come apart.

And that is just the beginning of their troubles!

Excerpt:

Thirty seconds later, he was clearing the top of the wooden platform of the crow’s nest. Pulling himself up, he stopped, and knelt down by her.

“Arabella?”

Her eyes opened long enough to see his face, and she lurched forward, knocking him over on his back, with his head hanging over the side and holding on as if her life depended on it.

“You’re going to push us both to our deaths. Relax.”

“Hold me!” she whispered.

In a half-second, he flipped her over, closer to the center of the platform, until he was on top of her. Her hair cascaded over the floor of the crow’s nest.

“I am. But I swear, young lady, when I get you down, you’ll wish I was nowhere near you. I have only one question for you. Look at me.”

Slowly, she raised her eyes to his.

“I want to know why you’re up here.”

She lowered her gaze. “That’s not a question.”

“Does the phrase ‘you’re on thin ice mean anything to you? Answer me.”

She blinked.

“Arabella? Shall I raise your skirts and take my belt to your little bottom with the whole crew standing below and watching?”

“No!” she cried out. “No sir. But—may I tell you when I get down? I-I can’t think right now.”

He took hold of her face, staring down into her eyes. Their gazes locked, and a moment later,

their lips. He deepened the kiss, and she stiffened for just a few seconds, as he sought her tongue with his.

At first she seemed surprised. Gregory raised his head, just slightly, and suddenly Arabella pulled his head down to hers and returned his kiss hungrily. Her tongue danced with his, coaxing it further inside.

A moment later, he raised his head and leaned down, touching his forehead to hers.

Emerald Christmas by Pippa Greathouse - Another FREE cold weather, hot story

Are you enjoying the free stories that Blushing Books has been offering every day? Don’t miss today’s from that wonderful writer, Pippa Greathouse. Here’s a quick glimpse of Emerald Christmas to pique your interest:

Blurb: Cassandra Fairfax, has had it. She has decided to take refuge in the home her late husband Daniel built for her in days before his death, nestled in the side of a mountain in North Carolina. Matthew Downing, who owns the mountain and the emerald mine it sits on has told her the house is hers to claim, and claim it she will, just in time for Christmas. And she’s managed to arrive in the middle of a terrible storm just in time to see lightning strike the side of the mountain where her home is.

Matthew Downing is a good man; so everyone says. But on the fourth anniversary of his wife’s death, he is in no mood to celebrate. And when Cassandra shows up, full of attitude, defiance, and her own form of determination, he’s not at all inclined to put up with it.

After lightning strikes the house, he finds himself chasing her up the side of the mountain in pursuit of a little boy who doesn’t speak. Matthew rescues both of them. He delivers the child back home, and furiously marches her to the sheriff’s office.

He’s stunned, when he realizes who she is. She’s burned her bridges behind her. She’s wet, cold, bedraggled and forlorn after weathering the storm, and he knows she needs someone to look out for her. He’s also sure he’s lost his mind.  She may be loveable, but in his opinion she’s also a brat.

Yes, he’ll take care of her; yes, he’ll marry her, but there are conditions to which she must agree.

She understands that he’ll discipline if she’s disobedient or defiant, but the last of the requirements is the hardest of all. He refuses the very thing she came here to do… to celebrate Christmas.

Can she agree to this? To any of it? Cassandra isn’t sure what to think of this tall, handsome, strict man she’s married. And she certainly never expects to love him.

And Matthew wonders just what he’ll be able to do with his lovable Cassandra on this Emerald Christmas.

Catching Carrie by Pippa Greathouse

Pippa Greathouse latest fun-filled novel  Catching Carrie is out now! This story features a feisty heroine and an implacably dominant hero – a combination that makes this spicy Western hard to put down.

Carrie Thompson arrives in Lesterville, Washington Territory, in 1885, quite alone. She has no money, no friends and, with the hotel full, no place to stay. Hank Barrow, the man she is to marry fails to show up to meet her, and she has no idea what to do.

On top of that, the justice of the peace has left town and won’t be back for well over two weeks.

When the sheriff of Lesterville, Sam Pettigrew, offers the top floor of his house to her, she has no option but to accept his hospitality; after all, he has assured her that Mr. and Mrs. Clancy, the caretakers, will be there to chaperone her.

One thing she learns about Sam, however, is that, while he is willing to go to great lengths to protect her, he has very little patience with young ladies who are not completely honest with him—and those who disobey. She, unfortunately, has already broken that rule and is about to break it again.

As days go by, she sees no sign of her intended. When she does finally see him, she realizes his instability and volatility, and she’s left with a choice. Can she make the right decision?

Or will keeping her word endanger her own life?

Excerpt:

Her hands reached up around his neck before she knew it, and she eagerly tasted his tongue, allowing her own to dance delicately with his. Suddenly, she realized how wanton she seemed, and gave a strangled cry.

“Carrie,” he said gruffly into her hair. “Marry me. I cannot allow you to marry Hank Barrow. I’ll tell him that I have forbidden you to—”

“—Samuel Pettigrew.” As if she fully heard what he’d just said, she stiffened. “You have forbidden me? I seem to recall you telling him that it was up to me. That no one would make that decision for me. And if I decide not to marry him, I'll pay him back the money he spent from what I earn from my sewing. He must be patient and wait for me to make it.”

Sam stared down at her, his eyes narrowing. “Are you refusing my offer of marriage, then?

She pushed back against his chest, glaring. Her voice was angry. “‘Carrie, marry me,’ is not an offer, Sheriff Pettigrew. It’s an order. I haven't made up my mind. And I’ll answer you when you ask. Nicely.” She stepped back. “I’ve decided I wish to be courted. Properly.”

“Have you now,” His voice was amused.

Although she couldn’t see his face clearly in the darkness, she heard the mirth in his voice.

“Yes. I have. With buggy rides. And flowers. And a ring. And I wish my suitor to get down on one knee to beg me to marry him.” She lifted her chin and then turned away.

“I see. Do you see Hank Barrow doing that?”

“I don’t care. It's what I want. I'll tell him that. Maybe if he knows—”

“If you tell him anything, I’ll insist on going with you. You are absolutely not to go alone.”

She whirled back, stomping a foot. But the softness of the ground and the softness of her foot somehow lost the desired effect. “I don’t need anyone to go with me.” Turning to march back up to the house, she made it two steps before she was lifted off the ground and tucked under his arm.  She kicked and squirmed, trying to get away. “Let me go!”

Sam took her to the porch, and put one foot up on the second step. Taking her by the waist, he plopped her over his thigh, holding her there with one hand. With the other, he lifted the tail of her gown and planted ten hard swats on her bare bottom, before standing her upright to face him.

“Let that be a warning, young lady. If I so much as catch a hint of you planning to go out there by yourself, the next spanking you get will be with the strap. Hear me?”

Even on the second step, she was forced to crane her neck to meet his eyes. Her own were blazing with anger, but tears were pooling. She turned to run into the house, forgetting the last step. When his hands on her waist caught her, and set her upright on the top, she took off, jerking open the front door and running up the staircase to her room.

Cicely has loved Abel Carter for most of her life. But last year, when he put her across his knee for one of her pranks on another Strasburg citizen, she had decided she could never face him again.

Abel, now known as the firm and fair judge in Shenandoah County, has never stopped loving her. But he’s determined that she will begin to act like a grown up young lady, instead of the impish, naughty child she’s always been.

Excerpt

Abel was on her in an instant, his arm about her waist. He had lifted her off her feet before she even knew it and hauled her back into the kitchen.

"Abel! Put me down! You don't understand!"

"I understand you are out of control, young lady. Calm yourself." His deep voice in her ear tried to get her attention. He didn't feel like he had accomplished it.

"No!"

Abel took her to the far end of the kitchen and pinned her to the wall, one hand on either side of her head. Immediately, she tried to duck under his arm, and he moved his hands under her arms and pushed her back against the wall with his hard body.

"Cicely Allison Carter." He leaned in close. His tone and voice were carefully controlled, but he was punctuating every syllable, now. "Unless you calm down this instant, I'll borrow a wooden spoon, and every person in this kitchen will witness you having your bottom paddled. Do you understand me?"
